The New Industrial Revolution

Built in America.
Again.

Steam, steel, electricity, the microchip: every industrial revolution has a home. The next one runs on compute, silicon, rockets and energy, and it is being built across the United States right now. Every number below is cited on the Sources page.

01

Artificial
Intelligence

The engine of the new century.

Generative AI went mainstream from American labs, and the capital, chips and talent behind it are concentrated in the United States more than in any other country.

  • $109.1 billion in private AI investment in the U.S. in 2024, roughly 12 times China's $9.3 billion.Stanford HAI, AI Index Report 2025
  • 40 notable AI models came from U.S.-based institutions in 2024, compared with 15 from China and 3 from Europe.Stanford HAI, AI Index Report 2025
  • Up to $500 billion in planned U.S. AI infrastructure was announced through the Stargate project in January 2025.OpenAI announcement, Jan 21 2025
  • $4 trillion: NVIDIA, the American company whose chips power most AI training, became the first company ever to reach this market value in July 2025.Reuters, July 2025

Semiconductors

The transistor was invented here. Now the factories are coming home.

Bell Labs invented the transistor in 1947 and Silicon Valley grew around it. For decades most advanced manufacturing moved overseas. That is changing.

  • $52.7 billion in the CHIPS and Science Act, signed August 9, 2022, including $39 billion in manufacturing incentives.U.S. Department of Commerce
  • $165 billion: TSMC's total planned investment in Arizona, announced in March 2025. Its first Phoenix fab began volume production of 4-nanometer chips in late 2024.TSMC press releases, 2024–2025
  • About 3×: U.S. chipmaking capacity is projected to roughly triple between 2022 and 2032, the fastest growth of any region.SIA / Boston Consulting Group, May 2024

Space

From Apollo to reusable rockets.

America put the first humans on the Moon in 1969. Fifty years later, American engineers made orbital rockets land and fly again, and the cost of reaching orbit dropped sharply.

  • December 21, 2015: a Falcon 9 first stage became the first orbital-class booster to land after launch.SpaceX
  • 134 Falcon launches in 2024 from a single American company. The U.S. flew more orbital launches that year than the rest of the world combined.SpaceX; launch logs compiled by Jonathan McDowell
  • October 13, 2024: the Starship Super Heavy booster was caught by the arms of its launch tower, a first in spaceflight.SpaceX, Flight 5
  • 4 million+ Starlink customers by September 2024, with internet from low Earth orbit reaching remote areas worldwide.SpaceX
04

Energy

Power for the AI age.

Data centers, fabs and factories need enormous amounts of power. America produces more oil and gas than any country in history, and it is building nuclear again.

  • 13.2 million barrels per day: average U.S. crude oil production in 2024, more than any country has ever produced. The U.S. has been the world's top producer every year since 2018.U.S. Energy Information Administration
  • #1 LNG exporter: in 2023 the U.S. became the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas.U.S. Energy Information Administration
  • Vogtle Units 3 & 4 entered service in Georgia in 2023 and 2024. They are the first new U.S. reactors built from scratch in decades and made Vogtle the largest nuclear power plant in the country.Georgia Power; U.S. DOE
  • Three Mile Island Unit 1 is being restarted as the Crane Clean Energy Center under a 20-year agreement to power Microsoft data centers (announced September 2024).Constellation Energy

Robotics

From the lab to the factory floor.

The first industrial robot, Unimate, went to work at a General Motors plant in New Jersey in 1961. Today American companies are building humanoid robots designed to work alongside people.

  • 1961: Unimate, invented by George Devol and developed with Joseph Engelberger, starts work on a GM assembly line, the world's first industrial robot.Robotic Industries Association; Smithsonian
  • 2024: Agility Robotics' Digit humanoid begins paid work at GXO Logistics in one of the first commercial humanoid deployments.GXO / Agility Robotics, June 2024
  • 2024: Boston Dynamics unveils a fully electric Atlas humanoid, and Figure AI raises $675 million to build general-purpose humanoids.Boston Dynamics; Figure AI, 2024

Biotech

Medicine at the speed of science.

From the polio vaccine to the human genome to mRNA, American research has repeatedly changed what medicine can do.

  • April 12, 1955: Jonas Salk's polio vaccine is announced safe and effective. Salk did not patent it.Salk Institute; CDC
  • 2003: the Human Genome Project, led by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Department of Energy with international partners, completes the human genome sequence.National Human Genome Research Institute
  • Under 1 year: through Operation Warp Speed (2020), the first COVID-19 vaccines were authorized in December 2020. Worldwide, COVID-19 vaccines are estimated to have prevented about 14.4 million deaths in their first year.HHS; Watson et al., The Lancet Infectious Diseases, 2022
  • 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine: Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman of the University of Pennsylvania, for the discoveries that made mRNA vaccines possible.Nobel Prize Outreach

The Factory Comeback

Building Again

Spending on new U.S. manufacturing construction more than tripled between 2021 and 2024, driven by chip fabs, battery plants and clean-tech factories. America is not only inventing the future. It is building it at home again.
